Dubai Debut for Fiji 7s Narogo Fueled by Vanua Pride

Fiji 7s Narogo Poised for Dubai Debut Fueled by Vanua Pride

Fiji 7s newcomer Apete Narogo is poised to make his international rugby debut in Dubai, driven by a profound sense of duty to his vanua, family, and nation that have significantly influenced his journey. At the age of 23 and originally from Nakorovou in Serua, Narogo has taken a remarkable route to joining the national squad.

His passion for rugby ignited during his time at Lomary Secondary School, where he dedicated himself primarily to sevens. In pursuit of his dream, Narogo often prioritized rugby over academics, recalling instances where he skipped classes and important exams to compete. “I ran away during one of my biggest exams just to go and play rugby at the Wairiki 7s. This was my first tour,” he reminisced.

Narogo’s inclusion in the national team is a testament to his years of perseverance and unwavering determination, particularly after facing numerous obstacles on his path to national representation. The moment he was called up to the extended squad is one he holds dear. “This has greatly challenged me because the rest of the players are representing their ‘vanua,’ and I also have to represent my ‘vanua’ to the best of my ability,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to honoring his family and his country.

His talent was recognized earlier this year when he shone at the Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s, earning the title of best player while representing Semi Radradra’s Ubuntu team. The highly anticipated Dubai 7s, scheduled from November 29 to December 1, will kick off the new HSBC SVNS season, an event that has generated excitement among fans.

Narogo’s journey resonates with many aspiring athletes in Fiji, encapsulating a narrative of hard work, resilience, and hope. As he prepares to don the white jersey of Fiji and represent his nation on the global stage, his story serves as inspiration for others striving for excellence in rugby. This opportunity not only allows Narogo to showcase his talent but also signals a bright future for him and the Fiji 7s team as they embark on a new season filled with potential.
