Cancer continues to pose a significant public health challenge, according to Fiji’s Health and Medical Services Assistant Minister, Penioni Ravunawa. Speaking at a 5-kilometer awareness walk organized by the Fiji Cancer Society in Suva, Mr. Ravunawa underlined the critical need for increased awareness regarding cancer, a disease that has tragically taken the lives of many Fijians.
“This cancer awareness walk sends a strong message: cancer remains a serious public health concern, but early detection and healthier lifestyles can save lives,” Ravunawa asserted. He emphasized that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services encourages all Fijians to engage in regular screenings, recognize warning signs, and seek medical assistance without delay. “Together, as a nation, we must stand united in the fight against cancer,” he added.
In a parallel effort, Lautoka hosted a similar 5-kilometer walk, organized by the FSC western branch, starting from Shirley Park. Litia Qoro, the branch events and advocacy coordinator, expressed gratitude for the extensive support received from both public and private organizations in the battle against cancer. She praised the families and community supporters who braved inclement weather to participate in the event.
This year’s walk aligned with the global theme “United by Unique,” which honors the resilience found within the various cancer experiences of patients, survivors, caregivers, families, and healthcare providers. Such initiatives not only raise awareness but also foster a sense of community and solidarity in the pursuit of overcoming cancer.
