The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) has voiced significant concerns regarding deteriorating governance and human rights conditions in Fiji during 2025, cautioning that these issues may jeopardize democracy and the rule of law. In a statement released on December 31, the coalition highlighted systemic injustices and diminishing accountability as persistent challenges affecting the daily lives of many Fijians.
The organization has expressed strong disapproval of the proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission, arguing that its design inadequately differentiates between victims and perpetrators of past human rights abuses, potentially retraumatizing survivors and eroding public trust in the process.
Additionally, the NGOCHR raised alarms about the National Referendum Bill 2025, suggesting that its provisions might criminalize ordinary advocacy efforts, thereby restricting public discourse and infringing upon freedoms of expression, association, and political participation guaranteed by the Constitution.
The coalition pointed to a concerning pattern of increased militarization within the government, ongoing limitations on peaceful assembly, and self-censorship among media outlets. It also underscored the marginalization of various groups, including women, children, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQI+ persons, and migrant workers, as critical ongoing issues.
Furthermore, NGOCHR has called into question the government’s spending priorities, frequent cabinet reshuffles, and what it describes as arbitrary decision-making processes. These issues come amidst rising living costs, gaps in healthcare services, and significant infrastructure shortcomings.
The NGOCHR urged the Government to promptly amend restrictive laws, enhance police accountability, protect civic spaces, address violence against women and girls, and implement people-centered policies aimed at poverty alleviation and essential service provision.
The coalition emphasized that mere symbolic reforms will not suffice; rather, tangible human rights must be realized in practice, ensuring transparent governance and guaranteeing justice and dignity for all Fijians. This urge for action presents an opportunity for the Fijian government to address pressing concerns and work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
