Fields’ Steelers Debut: Promise and Pitfalls in Preseason Opener

PITTSBURGH — Justin Fields’ debut with the Steelers in Friday night’s preseason opener was marked by some notable moments, but two critical mistakes overshadowed his performance.

Fields struggled with fumbled snaps during his first two drives, contributing to a disappointing 20-12 loss against the Houston Texans. Coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged some positive aspects of Fields’ game but emphasized that the miscommunication between Fields and center Nate Herbig significantly impacted their early progress.

“He did some nice things,” Tomlin said. “But obviously, he was involved in the exchange errors, and for me, that’s a shared responsibility between the center and the quarterback, which negated many good things we saw in those opening drives.”

Fields participated in three series, completing 5 of 6 passes for 67 yards, but he faced two sacks in addition to the fumbles. The first fumble occurred during the opening drive as the Steelers advanced past midfield, resulting in a 4-yard loss that led to a punt just three plays later.

On the subsequent drive, another fumbled snap was recovered by fullback Jack Colletto for a gain of 4 yards, but the Steelers were still forced to punt after Fields managed just 2 yards on a scramble and was then sacked by Danielle Hunter for an 8-yard loss.

“We were just shooting ourselves in the foot,” Fields reflected. “Fumbled snaps, and across all phases, we definitely need to improve there.

“I think it’s essential that we’re on the same page regarding snapping. I take responsibility for making sure I know who is at center, how to adjust, and what needs to be done.”

Herbig took full responsibility for the mistakes after the game. Once Fields exited, third-string quarterback Kyle Allen took over and completed 17 of 23 passes for 193 yards.

Ahead of their next preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, the Steelers are likely to increase their quarterback roster. Tomlin indicated that Russell Wilson could return, following his absence due to a calf injury that kept him out of Friday’s game, leading to Fields being named the starter.

“It was cool,” Fields said about the atmosphere. “I think our uniforms are really cool. I liked the black and yellow, black and gold, so it was awesome to put on the new threads and get a feel for a new stadium.”

Despite the setbacks, Fields demonstrated his potential, connecting on his first five passes, including a strong 20-yard throw to wide receiver Van Jefferson.

“I felt I was in a good rhythm and that we were moving the ball well,” Fields said. “The fumbled snaps unfortunately killed those drives, but overall, I think we moved in and out of the huddle efficiently and maintained a good feel.”

His only incompletion was a deep throw to Jefferson that was ruled out of bounds, a call Fields disagreed with, believing the catch was completed.

“This was also the first chance to work with new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Though the offense only managed 12 points, they achieved 344 total yards, 19 first downs, 109 rushing yards, and averaged 6 yards per play.

“You can get a sense of how Arthur thinks about the game and communicates on the sideline,” Fields remarked. “So, having this real-game experience with him was beneficial. Overall, I think the process and logistics went well.”
