Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the former Chief Executive of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation, along with Vimlesh Sagar, the current Chief Financial Officer, are scheduled to plead next month in response to charges filed against them by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC). Both individuals appeared today in the Suva Magistrates Court, where the prosecution sought additional time to prepare specific details pertinent to the case.
FICAC’s Counsel urged the defendants to enter their pleas, but the defense opted to wait until the particulars are disclosed. Sayed-Khaiyum faces charges of abuse of office and general dishonesty, both of which are said to have led to financial losses. Sagar has been charged with one count of general dishonesty, also linked to an alleged loss.
The allegations center around the procurement process for a vehicle valued at $207,470. The case has been adjourned until March 5, when the accused will be required to enter their pleas and the prosecution is expected to present more detailed information about the alleged financial loss.
This significant case highlights FICAC’s continued efforts to combat corruption in Fiji’s public sector, reinforcing the critical need for accountability among public officials. The proceedings will be closely watched as they reflect the commitment to ensuring integrity in government operations, providing hope for improved governance in the nation.
