Members of the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) have successfully completed their preparatory briefing in Manila, Philippines, in anticipation of the 22nd Regular Session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). Taking place from November 25 to 30, 2025, the members finalized their collective positions and developed a cohesive coordination strategy to present a united front at the Commission, outlining their key priorities.
During this critical preparation period, FFA members engaged in bilateral meetings with prominent fishing nations to promote their priorities, garner support for significant proposals, and enhance collaboration on mutual fisheries interests. The members also held discussions with the WCPFC Secretariat, involving WCPFC Chair Dr. Josie Tamate and Executive Director Rhea Moss-Christian, to ensure that their positions were well-articulated.
Poi Okesene, Chair of the Forum Fisheries Committee (FFC) Officials, reiterated the priorities for the FFA Members at the upcoming Commission. Key initiatives include advocating for the adoption of a Management Procedure and Implementation Measure specifically for South Pacific albacore. The members are also pushing for greater recognition of Article 30 of the WCPFC Convention, advocating for climate-responsive fisheries management, reinforcing transshipment and monitoring protocols, and making strides in bycatch mitigation.
As the members gear up for the Commission meeting scheduled for December 1 to 5, 2025, there is a sense of optimism. “The FFA Secretariat is pleased to support the Membership in the preparations for this year’s Commission, providing technical guidance and helping to advance key fisheries management priorities such as South Pacific albacore. We are confident in the work that has been done, and we wish our members every success as they take these priorities forward this week,” stated FFA Director-General Noan David Pakop.
This collaborative effort among the FFA members signals a proactive approach to sustainable fisheries management in the region, highlighting their commitment to balancing economic aspirations with environmental stewardship.
