Fever’s Victory Sparks Playoff Hopes: Can Clark Break the Rookie Record?

The Indiana Fever secured a hard-fought 84-79 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Monday night, marking their 14th win of the season, the highest total since 2016, the year that marked Tamika Catchings’ final season and Indiana’s last playoff appearance.

Despite holding a 14-point lead at one point, the Fever faced a challenge as the Dream narrowed the gap to just two points with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, crucial fouls by Atlanta allowed the Fever to maintain their lead and secure the win.

The Fever’s record now stands at 14-16, keeping them in seventh place in the WNBA standings and within reach of the playoffs.

Key Highlights:

Caitlin Clark’s Ankle Injury

Fans held their breath when Fever rookie Caitlin Clark fell and injured her ankle in the first quarter after tangling with Nia Coffey near the free-throw line. Although she required a timeout for evaluations, Clark did not leave the bench and quickly returned for the second quarter without showing any signs of a limp. Clark has dealt with ankle injuries before, shrugging off the pain, stating that every basketball player experiences such injuries.

Lexie Hull Steps Up

Lexie Hull, who earlier in the season was frequently benched, is now earning significant playing time and started the second half in place of Katie Lou Samuelson. Hull played 30 minutes against the Dream, contributing two points, four rebounds, and two assists. Meanwhile, Samuelson, typically a starter, has seen her playing time diminish as Hull has become more integrated into the lineup.

Kelsey Mitchell Shines

Kelsey Mitchell continues to shine after the Olympic break, scoring over 24 points per game in the last four games. In Monday’s match, she put up 29 points, shooting 10-of-23 and sealing the game with critical free throws in the final moments. Mitchell’s scoring prowess has notably escalated, as she averages 17.8 points for the season.

Caitlin Clark’s Record Chase

In addition to her impressive performance, Clark tied the rookie record for three-pointers made in a season, sinking four against the Dream to bring her total to 85. With ten games left in the season, she has the opportunity to set a new rookie record, surpassing Rhyne Howard’s previous mark established in 2022. Clark ended the game with 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
