The Indiana Fever are currently facing challenges, sitting on a three-game losing streak that began with a defeat against the New York Liberty on May 24. Although falling to the reigning WNBA champions is understandable, recent losses to the Washington Mystics and Connecticut Sun—two opponents deemed more beatable—have added to the team’s frustrations.
A significant factor impacting the Fever’s performance has been the absence of star guard Caitlin Clark due to a left quad strain. In her absence, Kelsey Mitchell has taken on a heavier offensive load. However, Mitchell’s performance has suffered, leading to disappointing shooting statistics—she has made only 8 of 31 attempts from the field, which translates to roughly 25.8% efficiency, during the games without Clark.
Mitchell has acknowledged the struggles the team is facing and expressed her awareness of the situation. After Monday’s practice, she commented, “I think the one thing that we’ve all been struggling with lately is just making conscious decisions, unconsciously… I think that we’ve been overthinking a bit, in every aspect the last couple games.”
Addressing the need to simplify their play, Mitchell noted the importance of making straightforward decisions. “Making the right play, but keeping it simple. And not overthinking,” she emphasized, reinforcing what Coach White has been instructing.
Despite the recent challenges, the Fever have an opportunity to regroup and refocus as they seek to bounce back from this tough stretch. With Clark’s eventual return, the team hopes to regain its rhythm and deliver stronger performances moving forward. This resilience could turn their current situation into a learning experience that sets the tone for their playoff ambitions.
