Fetty took significant steps during his time behind bars, including earning his GED and attending HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) courses, enhancing his skills beyond music. “I got my GED. I took a few HVAC courses,” he stated, underlining his commitment to bettering himself. These practical skills could provide him with new opportunities outside of his music career.
His time in prison exposed him to other inmates who had established successful businesses prior to their convictions. This gave him a broader view of potential revenue streams. He noted, “You meet a lot of people that … they had legitimate businesses and making a good amount of money. So I’m like, well, he making, like, rapper money. I’ma try that out.” This shift in mindset reflects the growth he experienced during his time away.
When asked if he aimed to seamlessly return to his previous music career, Fetty candidly replied, “No.” This realistic approach highlights how the music industry, as well as his own life, has evolved. Recognizing that he needs to diversify his skills and opportunities is a significant step in his journey.
In addition to his educational pursuits, Fetty transformed his physical health while incarcerated. In an interview with VIBE, he explained that he gained 85 pounds during his time in prison, moving from 140 to about 225 pounds. This weight gain was intentional, stemming from a disciplined workout routine he established. “I like the feeling of the after effect of working out,” he expressed, emphasizing that it was part of a larger self-care discipline.
As a father of six, Fetty’s focus on structure and discipline extends beyond personal gain; it is motivated by his desire to set a positive example for his children.
