The 2025 Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards (FETA) is poised to adopt a more inclusive strategy, placing significant focus on recognizing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the tourism industry. Debra Sadranu, chairperson of the FETA board of trustees, elaborated on this vision during an exclusive interview with The Fiji Times, underscoring the need for the awards to represent the entire spectrum of the tourism sector, not just the larger resorts.

With a total of 23 award categories, including two special trustee awards, the expansion aims to highlight diverse segments of the tourism landscape. This initiative is designed to provide recognition opportunities for various contributors, including those offering inbound tourism services, activities, and accommodations.

As the first female chair of FETA, Ms. Sadranu asserted that leadership is shaped more by passion and expertise than by gender. She emphasized, “It’s about passion, knowledge of the industry, and identifying ways to improve or expand every year.” Her commitment to fostering progress reflects the necessity for the awards to continuously evolve to include deserving individuals and new categories.

The theme for this year’s awards, “Echoes of Fiji,” aims to celebrate the profound impact of success within the tourism sector. Ms. Sadranu articulated that this theme embodies the essential sounds of tourism and represents how joyous moments create enduring memories.

Set for February 28 at the new Convention Centre at Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort and Spa, this year’s gala promises to deliver a refreshing experience for attendees. Ms. Sadranu expressed enthusiasm about the new venue, stating, “We’re excited to bring something new to the awards this year, and I think having a new venue helps add to that experience.”

The event is set to not only highlight exceptional talent in hospitality but also celebrate the excellence that characterizes Fijian culture, signaling a bright and promising future for both FETA and the tourism industry as a whole. The progressive approach and emphasis on inclusivity underscore the commitment to recognizing all contributions within the vibrant Fijian tourism sector.
