Festive Season Spotlight: Handmade Crafts Fuel Independence for Disabled Youth

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities in the Northern Division is preparing for the upcoming festive season by offering a selection of handmade craft products suited for various events, functions, and home décor. Monisha Rao, the Clerical Officer North, noted that these crafts are produced by students with diverse abilities, offering them a platform to generate income that fosters their long-term independence and well-being.

Rao emphasized the importance of shifting the perception of disabilities, urging the public to recognize abilities over limitations. “We have young adults with disabilities at the center creating products such as garments, pillows, and cushion covers that teach them valuable income generation skills. We are fortunate to have a booth at International Disability Day to showcase our products, which we hope will attract more markets and generate additional income for these young individuals,” she explained.

Reshma Prasad, a teacher involved in the initiative, echoed the sentiment that success and independence become achievable when individuals are provided with real opportunities to flourish. She highlighted the importance of recognizing each individual’s abilities and encouraging growth across various domains. “Every child deserves an equal opportunity for all the resources available,” Prasad remarked, emphasizing that although stigma surrounding disabilities has decreased, there is still a pressing need for increased awareness and accessibility to ensure inclusivity.

As the festive season draws near, the center remains optimistic that its handmade products will not only find buyers but also contribute to the establishment of a market that celebrates talent, inclusion, and the economic capabilities of every individual. This approach not only promotes economic independence but also fosters a community that values diversity and supports the aspirations of all its members.
