As the festive season approaches, supermarkets around the nation are bustling with activity, preparing for an increase in customer demand as holiday shopping kicks into high gear. Vishwa Nadan, the manager at Rajendra’s Foodtown Supermarket, reported that shopping patterns have remained consistent with previous years, highlighting that popular products include chicken, juice, ice cream, various meats, and snacks.

“We have stocked up on our inventory as we do each year to accommodate the busy festive period and Christmas sales,” said Mr. Nadan. The list of staple items for shoppers this time of year frequently includes chicken, ice cream, sausages, juice, snacks, and fruit cakes.

In an effort to entice customers, supermarkets are rolling out promotions, which have proven effective, particularly among residents from islands such as Kadavu, Lau, and Rotuma, who travel to Suva to gather essentials. “As the school holiday season begins, we’ve observed an influx of island customers purchasing items in bulk, packing them for transport back home,” Mr. Nadan noted, adding that supermarket staff assist in preparing these goods for shipping.

Mr. Nadan advises shoppers to remain calm and spend thoughtfully, particularly given the unpredictability of the weather. “We are all in this festive season together; let’s hope for clearer skies ahead. Enjoy the atmosphere, shop safely, and make the most of this special time,” he encouraged.

The festive spirit extends throughout Suva as stores decorate for the season, reflecting a shift in focus following Diwali. Jitesh Patel, president of the Suva Retail Association, pointed out that this period typically marks a surge in foot traffic, with businesses prepared to welcome families and shoppers who are eager to take advantage of seasonal deals.

“We’ve noticed some shoppers beginning their back-to-school shopping early to avoid the January rush, while others are busy selecting Christmas gifts,” said Mr. Patel. He anticipates that the trend of increased shopping activity, particularly on weekends, will carry through December, culminating in a bustling final week before Christmas as last-minute shoppers finalize their purchases before heading off to celebrate in villages or islands.

Safety is a priority during this busy time, and Mr. Patel assured customers of enhanced security measures throughout the city. “We have security cameras in place and are collaborating with local police to ensure a visible presence on the streets,” he said. He encourages shoppers to communicate any issues with store managers and reassures that retailers are committed to excellent customer service.

As the business community in Suva rolls out the welcome mat for the festive season, the sentiment is clear: residents and visitors are invited to embrace the joyous atmosphere, shop responsibly, and spread holiday cheer throughout the city.
