The Christmas light display at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ temple in Kensington, Maryland, has become a beloved seasonal attraction, drawing thousands of visitors each year. This year’s attendance has proven to be particularly robust, marking the busiest season since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Temple Visitor Center Director Dave Colton noted the significant turnout, stating that on Christmas Day alone, around 10,000 visitors passed through the visitor center, and at least an equal number explored the temple grounds. While the high attendance is welcome, it has also posed challenges.
Colton explained, “The crowds have been wonderfully big, but the big crowds have been wonderfully problematic.” The event, concluding on January 1, requires extensive coordination, with an eight-member team spending two months dismantling the display and another two months preparing it for the next holiday season.
The popularity of the event has been fueled by enhancements such as live musical performances at the visitor center. Colton also credits the reach of social media and platforms like TikTok and Google Maps for increasing awareness, albeit with some unintended consequences, including navigational confusion that has directed visitors through nearby neighborhoods.
With limited parking available at the visitor center, some visitors have found themselves parking in residential areas, occasionally obstructing driveways. In response, the Church is collaborating with local officials and residents to mitigate these parking issues. Increased signage designating “local traffic only” on some streets is one such measure being implemented.
Looking ahead, Colton indicated that potential solutions for next year might include timed parking slots to manage the influx of visitors more effectively and providing passes for neighbors who wish to visit the temple.
This year’s Festival of Lights has showcased the spirit of community and joy surrounding the holiday season, while also highlighting the need for thoughtful planning and coordination as interest in the event grows. With collaborative efforts in place, both visitors and neighbors can continue to enjoy this festive tradition in a more manageable and considerate manner.
