Two years after a devastating Ferris wheel accident that claimed the life of a 21-year-old woman during a public event in June 2023, legal proceedings have commenced against Ashneel Nath, a local occupational health and safety officer. Nath, 34, faces charges of manslaughter due to an alleged breach of duty, which was addressed in a hearing at the Suva Magistrates Court today.
The tragic incident involved the young woman falling from the Ferris wheel, resulting in her death, while a mother and daughter also suffered injuries. Preliminary reports suggest that the Ferris wheel may have unexpectedly increased its speed, leading to a loss of control by the operator.
During Nath’s initial court appearance, the prosecution requested stringent bail conditions that included cash bail, surrender of his passport, two sureties, and a restraining order to prevent witness tampering. In contrast, the defense highlighted Nath’s full cooperation throughout the investigation, noting that he had voluntarily approached authorities prior to his court date.
Ultimately, Nath was granted a non-cash bail set at $1,000, along with the necessary sureties. The case has been moved to the Suva High Court, with the next hearing scheduled for November 21.
This incident has ignited considerable public discourse regarding safety standards and accountability in amusement park operations. The pursuit of justice underscores the community’s demand for stricter safety measures, aiming to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future. As the legal process unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the critical importance of maintaining safety in public recreational spaces.
