Ferrari is embarking on a distinctive strategy for its 2026 season preparations by testing two separate car configurations. This approach comes as the team aims for a fresh start following an underwhelming performance in the 2025 season.

Team principal Fred Vasseur has confirmed that Ferrari will split its early testing program into two distinct specifications to collect valuable data before finalizing their direction. Reports indicate that the initial phase will include a so-called Spec A car, which will be tested during the closed Barcelona tests scheduled for the end of January. This version focuses on integrating the power unit and electronics, as well as the new energy management systems, prioritizing reliability and data quality over immediate performance.

Following the Barcelona tests, the team will advance to the official Bahrain tests, where the more representative Spec B will make its debut. This version is expected to showcase the intended aerodynamic design, suspension setup, and cooling architecture that aligns more closely with what fans can anticipate from the race car.

Amidst the development of these two concepts, rumors about engine advancements are also circulating. Auto Motor und Sport has reported that Ferrari is experimenting with an innovative cylinder head design for its new 2026 power unit. According to sources, engineers at Maranello have been testing both traditional aluminum and a heavier steel alloy version, with the latter allowing for elevated pressure and temperature levels under the new fuel and boost regulations. The increased minimum engine weight for 2026 has seemingly made this adjustment feasible, and Ferrari appears poised to shift its focus entirely to the steel design, citing confidence in its durability.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasized the necessity for Ferrari to respond proactively to its current standing, stating that consistently finishing fourth should not be acceptable for such an illustrious team. He expressed a desire for Ferrari to reclaim its competitive edge.

Additionally, former Ferrari driver Arturo Merzario weighed in on the performance of current drivers, particularly Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Merzario defended Hamilton, asserting that despite the challenges of the 2025 season, Hamilton’s talent remains intact, while he described Leclerc as an accomplished driver but not quite on the same level as Hamilton.
