The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has addressed recent concerns regarding inadequate consultations related to the proposed electricity tariff increases. This response comes amid complaints from Labasa residents about Energy Fiji Limited’s (EFL) plans to implement a significant 32% price hike over the next four years.
Residents have critiqued the initial consultation session, describing it as more of a promotional event than a genuine platform for dialogue. Many expressed disappointment over the absence of senior officials and a lack of direct engagement with community members.
In rebuttal, FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta asserted that the consultations are intended to facilitate one-on-one interactions, allowing individuals to express their views directly to FCCC officers. She emphasized the authenticity of the consultations, stating they are not just a “box-ticking exercise,” and that staff are diligently meeting with residents and recording their feedback.
Consultation efforts are currently underway in both the Northern and Western Divisions, with additional sessions planned for the Central Division next week. Jiuta has announced her intention to attend an upcoming consultation in Nadi at FNPF Plaza from 10 AM to 3 PM, encouraging local residents to engage with her personally.
Furthermore, the FCCC has actively reached out to various stakeholders, including business groups and non-governmental organizations, inviting them to contribute written feedback and engage in roundtable discussions. The commission clarified that the proposal for the tariff increase was initiated by Energy Fiji Limited, rather than the FCCC itself. EFL representatives will be present during consultations to address technical questions, while FCCC officials will provide insights into the process that is being undertaken and gather public opinions.
To facilitate community feedback, a 21-day consultation period has been established, during which residents can express their thoughts on the proposed changes. The FCCC has introduced a Bill Calculator to help users understand the potential effects on their electricity bills. They have also emphasized the importance of accurate information from residents, as any misinformation could obstruct meaningful public engagement.
The FCCC remains dedicated to fostering an environment where community members feel empowered to voice their perspectives on the proposed tariff changes, highlighting the significance of active participation in this crucial conversation. This commitment not only reflects the FCCC’s responsiveness to community concerns but also aims to ensure that the voices of Fijians are heard and considered in this important decision-making process.
