On December 3, recognized as the International Day of People with Disabilities, FC Barcelona has reaffirmed its dedication to improving accessibility and promoting inclusion for individuals with various disabilities. Over the past year, the club has implemented a number of initiatives through its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion department to ensure that individuals, regardless of their physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges, can access its facilities, services, and information in the safest and most independent manner possible. This commitment is a vital part of creating a more inclusive society and defending the rights and well-being of people with disabilities.
FC Barcelona is making strides towards physical accessibility with several updates. The introduction of inclusive mannequins in official stores showcases diversity through models representing individuals with varying physical needs, such as those in wheelchairs or using prosthetic devices. Additionally, the Palau Blaugrana now features a designated area for wheelchair users, offering seven new seats, each accompanied by space for a companion. To further facilitate ticket purchasing, the club has launched an online system that allows for easier access to these specially designated seats.
In terms of sensory accessibility, FC Barcelona has taken measures to enhance the experience of visitors with hearing and visual impairments during the Barça Immersive Tour. Improvements include a new magnetic loop, multimedia audio guides with subtitles in multiple languages, and noise-cancelling headphones for those on the autism spectrum. The Barça Museum has also responded by launching ‘Hores + Tranquil·les’, where guests can enjoy a calming environment every Saturday with reduced noise and light levels, designed to be more accommodating for individuals with autism or sensory sensitivities.
The club is also making strides in digital accessibility by offering employee training on web content creation and graphic design, ensuring that digital media is accessible to all fans. They have even partnered with ONCE to promote accessibility in the upcoming Spotify Camp Nou and celebrated key dates, such as sign language events, with inclusive activities and special performances.
FC Barcelona marked its 125th anniversary by creating a sensory relief painting for blind children, allowing them to feel the mascot, as well as providing a live ceremony broadcast with subtitles and sign language, ensuring that the event was accessible to all.
As FC Barcelona continues to set benchmarks in accessibility and inclusion, it represents a hopeful movement towards a future where all individuals can engage fully in community activities, sports, and culture. These efforts not only celebrate diversity but also pave the way for other organizations to follow suit, highlighting the importance of creating an environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate and thrive.
