FC Barcelona Champions Deaf Inclusion with Anthem Performance

FC Barcelona honored the deaf community by showcasing a performance of the Barça anthem in sign language during a recent match at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The event coincided with the International Week of the Deaf and International Sign Language Day.

A choir from the Barcelona Deaf Cultural and Recreational Center, alongside the Barça Deaf Supporters’ Club, delivered the anthem in sign language. Prior to the game, deaf children from the club and the Catalan Association of Families and People with Deafness (ACAPPS) had the honor of walking onto the field with the players.

The Barça Deaf Supporters’ Club introduced the sign language representation for the word “BARÇA,” aimed at promoting the team’s identity among sign language users.

As part of their 125th anniversary celebrations, FC Barcelona initiated a campaign inviting fans to engage with the sign language rendition of the Barça Anthem. Notable players, including Jules Koundé, Marc Casadó, Sergi Domínguez, Jana Fernández, Marta Torrejón, and Ona Batlle, took part in the initiative.

This campaign was developed in partnership with Visualfy, a startup dedicated to providing solutions for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

In its ongoing effort to foster diversity and inclusiveness, FC Barcelona has entered into agreements with organizations such as ACAPPS and ONCE Social Group, and has delivered digital accessibility training to its staff.

“This initiative is just one of many driven by our DEI department as part of a partnership with ACAPPS, a non-governmental organization focused on advocating for the rights of deaf individuals who communicate orally, ensuring they enjoy full access and participation across all life areas,” FC Barcelona stated in a press release.
