On December 3rd, which is recognized as the International Day of People with Disabilities, FC Barcelona has reaffirmed its dedication to accessibility and inclusiveness. Over the past year, the club has initiated several programs through its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department aimed at ensuring that individuals with various physical, sensory, or cognitive conditions can access its facilities and services safely and independently. These measures demonstrate the club’s commitment to championing the rights and well-being of people with disabilities and fostering a more inclusive society.
In terms of physical accessibility, FC Barcelona has taken significant steps. Inclusive mannequins have been introduced in the official stores to mirror societal diversity, featuring models in wheelchairs and with other assistive devices. At the Palau Blaugrana, a newly designed area for wheelchair users has been established, complete with additional seats for companions. An innovated online ticketing system has also made it easier for wheelchair users to purchase tickets for various events.
For sensory accessibility, the club has made notable improvements to the Barça Immersive Tour, ensuring a welcoming experience for visitors with hearing and visual impairments. This includes the installation of a magnetic loop, multimedia audio guides with subtitles, and noise-canceling headphones for those with heightened auditory sensitivity. The Barça Museum has introduced “Hores + Tranquil·les,” designated quieter hours to accommodate individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities, combined with staff training on cognitive accessibility.
Digital accessibility is another area where FC Barcelona is focusing its efforts. The club is conducting audits and providing training for its staff on accessible web content, graphic design, and digital development. A collaboration with ONCE aims to enhance accessibility in the new Spotify Camp Nou, accompanied by various activities to honor the International Week of People with Deafness and International Day of Sign Language.
Additionally, during the 125th-anniversary gala, FC Barcelona showcased sensory relief paintings for blind children and ensured that the event’s live broadcast included subtitles and sign language interpretation.
As FC Barcelona continues to lead by example, the club is setting new standards for accessibility and inclusion, working diligently to ensure that both its physical and digital environments are available to all individuals, promoting a more equitable and inclusive community. The initiatives undertaken not only foster a culture of respect and understanding but also serve as a beacon of hope for ongoing progress in disability rights.
