FC Barcelona honored the deaf community with a sign language performance of the Barça anthem during a recent match at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The event coincided with the celebration of International Week of the Deaf and International Sign Language Day.
A choir from the Barcelona Deaf Cultural and Recreational Center, along with the Barça Deaf Supporters’ Club, delivered a rendition of the Barça Anthem in sign language. Prior to the match, deaf children from the club and the Catalan Association of Families and People with Deafness (ACAPPS) walked onto the field with the players.
In a significant gesture, the Barça Deaf Supporters’ Club introduced a sign language representation of the word “BARÇA” to enhance team recognition among sign language users.
As part of its 125th anniversary festivities, FC Barcelona initiated a campaign inviting fans to learn and perform the sign language version of the Barça Anthem. Notable players, including Jules Koundé, Marc Casadó, Sergi Domínguez, Jana Fernández, Marta Torrejón, and Ona Batlle, joined in the campaign.
This initiative was developed in collaboration with Visualfy, a start-up focused on solutions for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
To strengthen its commitment to diversity and inclusivity, FC Barcelona has formed partnerships with organizations such as ACAPPS and the ONCE Social Group and has implemented digital accessibility training for its staff.
According to a press release from the club, “This is the latest of many actions by the DEI department arising from an agreement with ACAPPS, a non-governmental organization that aims to represent and defend the rights of deaf people who communicate orally, ensuring their full participation and accessibility in all areas of life.”
