FBI Probes Houston Medical Savings Firm in Alleged $200 Million Fraud

A Houston-based company, Health Matching Account Services (HMA), is under investigation by the FBI for allegedly defrauding thousands of customers through its now-defunct website, which claimed to provide the “ultimate medical savings product” for those seeking assistance with bills not covered by insurance. The company’s promises included doubling customers’ funds through monthly contributions, a claim that has since been declared fraudulent.

The investigation follows a series of consumer complaints highlighted in a February report by KHOU 11 Investigates. Customers, such as Alvaro Ledesma, voiced frustration over difficulties in obtaining claims, despite having deposited significant amounts into their accounts. Many felt trapped by the fine print of their contracts, which stipulated that failure to make regular contributions could lead to account termination and the loss of their balance. Ledesma expressed relief at the FBI’s involvement, stating, “Now that the FBI is involved, that’s very good news for me.”

Chicago attorney Alex Loftus, who has initiated a class action lawsuit against HMA, reported that the company may have deceived around 40,000 customers, leading to a potential loss of $200 million, with minimal amounts actually disbursed in claims. Loftus emphasized the magnitude of the alleged fraud and noted that the case had gained traction due in part to tips from former HMA employees. One such insider, who was terminated, provided crucial information that led to the FBI’s raid on the company’s offices.

With the FBI now involved, Ledesma and others hold renewed hope for the possibility of recovering some of their funds. Loftus noted that since KHOU 11 began investigating, awareness of the case has been amplified, encouraging insiders to come forward.

In the aftermath of the FBI’s arrival, HMA employees were reportedly dismissed from their positions, leaving the future of the company and its operations uncertain. KHOU 11 Investigates reached out for comments from HMA and its representatives but has not yet received a response. The company had previously denied the allegations and declared its intent to defend itself.

As the situation evolves, the cooperation between customers, legal representatives, and federal authorities may lead to justice for those affected by this alleged scheme.
