Federal agencies have advised against sending messages between iPhone and Android devices due to rising foreign security threats. This warning comes after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) reported a significant cyber espionage campaign linked to the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
On November 13, the agencies highlighted that specific individuals, primarily involved in government or political activities, were targeted, leading to the theft of valuable customer call record data and other information subject to U.S. law enforcement requests.
One critical concern mentioned is the vulnerability of text messages exchanged between Android and Apple devices, which lack encryption, making them easier targets for espionage. Jeff Greene, CISA’s executive assistant director for cybersecurity, emphasized the importance of using encryption to shield communications. He stated, “Encryption is your friend,” asserting that even if data is intercepted, encryption prevents unauthorized access to the information.
In response to ongoing threats, the FBI and CISA released a guide, “Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance for Communications Infrastructure,” on December 4. The document contains strategies to bolster defenses against foreign cyber activities that have infiltrated global telecommunications networks. Greene underscored the seriousness of the threats posed by state-sponsored actors, particularly emphasizing the need for telecommunications and related organizations to adopt these protective measures.
Among the identified threats is the “Salt Typhoon,” a campaign attributed to a China-based group targeting major telecom providers like Verizon and AT&T. This incident is recognized as one of the most substantial intelligence breaches in U.S. history. Although the attack was uncovered, officials noted that significant disruption to consumer services was avoided.
