Father-Son Showdown as Odell Hodge Faces His Son Matt in ODU-Villanova Clash

PHILADELPHIA – Old Dominion men’s basketball is set to face Villanova at Finneran Pavilion on Tuesday night, marking a significant moment for ODU Special Assistant Odell Hodge. This matchup represents the first between the two teams in over 30 years, with their last encounter dating back to the 1995 NCAA Tournament, where Old Dominion triumphed over Villanova in a thrilling triple overtime game, ending 89-81.

For Hodge, this game holds a unique significance beyond the historical rivalry; it offers him the opportunity to coach against his eldest son, Matt, a redshirt freshman at Villanova. Matt recently showcased his talent with a strong 17-point performance during Villanova’s 70-55 victory over La Salle last week.

Odell Hodge, recognized as the CAA Player of the Year and Conference Tournament MVP in 1994 and 1997, gained experience playing and coaching overseas in Turkey, Taiwan, and Belgium after his tenure at Old Dominion. Transitioning to coaching in Belgium’s Professional League, he has built a substantial career in basketball.

Originally from Belgium, Hodge met his wife, Sofie Ceyssens, in 1999, and their family grew with Matt and younger brother Jayden, born in 2004 and 2007 respectively. Growing up in the Belgian province of Limburg, Matt was exposed to multiple languages, mastering French, Dutch, and English as he immersed himself in basketball from a young age.

Odell shared how dedicated his boys were to the sport, citing, “From the time that Matt was born, and Jayden too, they had a basketball in their hands.” He emphasized the separation he maintained between coaching and family life, stating, “I would never coach a senior level game because I didn’t want to bring it home.”

Matt’s development as a student-athlete flourished as he moved to the U.S. to attend a boarding school focused on both academics and basketball. He went on to play for St. Rose School in New Jersey, leading them to their first NJSIAA sectional title in 19 years and achieving impressive statistics.

Reflecting on the impending game, Odell expressed a mix of pride and nerves. “For us, I think we’ll have a good opportunity as a team, but as a family, it’s an unbelievable feeling,” he said. Despite the familial connection, Hodge is determined to support Old Dominion’s endeavors, emphasizing, “Tomorrow night, it’s about Old Dominion getting a basketball win.”

The Tuesday night game will mark the third meeting between the Old Dominion Monarchs and Villanova Wildcats, currently tied at 1-1. Scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff, fans can tune in via ESPN+ or listen on ESPN Sports Radio 94.1. This matchup not only showcases a historic rivalry but also embodies the bond of family in the world of sports, promising an exciting game filled with emotion and competitive spirit.
