Starting at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2024, residents in the downtown moving days area can place trash and recycling collection carts out for daily pickup.
The Streets Division will have crews patrolling the move-out area to empty collection carts beginning on August 5 as staffing and time permits.
The plan is for crews to finish their daily assignments and, when time allows, perform extra collections in the move-out area.
As more carts and items are placed out for pickup, additional staff will be reassigned from their regular duties to assist with collection tasks.
The goal is to provide daily collection services during workdays in the moving days area from Monday, August 5 through Friday, August 23.
Residents in the downtown moving days area, especially those relocating soon, are encouraged to continually fill and refill their collection carts.
Using carts correctly and frequently helps make Streets Division collections during the August move-out faster and safer for everyone.
Additionally, proper cart usage keeps the city cleaner and prevents piles of loose garbage from accumulating along the streets.
Guidelines for Trash Collection:
– Place trash inside the tan refuse cart.
– Place trash that cannot fit in the carts into trash bags.
– Do not leave loose trash on the ground.
– Do not use cardboard boxes for trash; they are recyclable. Stuffing garbage into boxes sends them to the landfill instead of being recycled.
– Keep trash and recycling separate.
Guidelines for Recycling Collection:
– Place only appropriate recyclables into the green cart.
– Do not place clothes, bedding, or other incorrect items into the green recycling cart.
– Extra recyclables at the curb should be placed in clear bags; colored bags will be considered trash.
– Do not leave loose recyclables on the ground.
– Flatten and bundle cardboard boxes for recycling. Do not stuff them into larger boxes.
– Keep the recycling cart lid closed when out for collection.
– Keep recycling separate from trash.
Cart Guidelines:
– Ensure carts are accessible for safe lifting and emptying.
– Keep trash and recycling carts separated.
– Leave collection carts at the rental property; they belong to the City and must remain for new tenants.
Drop-off Sites:
Residents with more recycling or trash than the carts can hold can bring the excess to a Streets Division drop-off site.
Residents are allowed one load per day of refuse, recycling, large items, or other items accepted at the drop-off site.
The single load cannot exceed the capacity of a standard pick-up truck bed or small single-axle trailer. Larger loads will be denied access.
For locations, hours, and restrictions of the drop-off sites, visit www.cityofmadison.com/DropOffSites.
