Harry Donahue, a cherished figure in Philadelphia’s broadcasting community, has passed away at the age of 77 after battling cancer. The news was confirmed by KYW Newsradio, which shared the sad update from Donahue’s family on Wednesday.

Donahue began his career at KYW Newsradio in 1974 as a freelance reporter, and by 1979, he had become an anchor. Over the next 35 years, he became a familiar voice for many Philadelphians, delivering news, traffic updates, weather forecasts, and the eagerly awaited announcements of snow days. His engaging presence made him a beloved part of the city’s mornings.

In addition to his role at KYW Newsradio, Donahue made significant contributions to Philadelphia’s sports broadcasting landscape. He provided play-by-play commentary for the Philadelphia Stars, the city’s USFL team during the 1980s. For over 20 years, he served as the voice of Temple University’s football and basketball teams and was also known for hosting “Inside Golf” on Comcast SportsNet. His extensive career included 15 years at NFL Films and he occasionally lent his voice to Philadelphia Eagles preseason games, as well as to Atlantic-10 basketball and Philadelphia 76ers coverage.

Donahue retired from KYW Newsradio in 2014, shortly after being inducted into the KYW Newsradio Hall of Fame. His exemplary work was further recognized when he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

During the celebration of KYW Newsradio’s 60th anniversary, Donahue reflected on his unique career, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to cover teams and personalities in the city where he grew up. “Who gets a chance to cover these types of teams, these types of individuals in the city where they grew up?” he remarked. “That was the special part for me.”

The legacy of Harry Donahue will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who tuned in to hear his voice, a testament to his significant impact on Philadelphia’s media and sports culture. His contributions will be fondly remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
