Patrick Gock, a highly regarded figure in Fijian rugby and a dedicated refereeing mentor and manager, passed away last Saturday, leaving the rugby community in mourning. The news was shared by his family, and it sent shockwaves, particularly through the Nadi Rugby Referees Association, with which Gock had significant connections.

In a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, the Nadi Rugby Referees Association expressed their profound sadness over Gock’s death, emphasizing his crucial role in shaping the careers of many referees. The association noted, “Many of us would not be where we are today without his guidance, his honest feedback, and his belief in our potential.” Known for his talent in recognizing and nurturing potential, Gock played a pivotal part in elevating those he mentored.

An alumnus of St John’s College in Cawaci, where he studied from 1980 to 1983, Gock had previously served as the referees manager for the Fiji Rugby Union. During his tenure, he advocated for the sport’s growth throughout the nation and made significant contributions to grassroots refereeing, fostering development at all levels.

Beyond his role as a referee manager, Gock was celebrated as a mentor and a staunch supporter for many in the rugby community. His passion for the sport and unwavering commitment to enhancing the skills and character of aspiring referees made a lasting impact.
