Hundreds of mourners filled the Nabua Methodist Church as they gathered to pay their respects to Unaisi Rokoura, a beloved figure in Fijian netball who tragically passed away at the age of 47. Rokoura lost her life while searching for freshwater mussels in Navuso, near Nausori, leaving behind a community that deeply cherished her contributions to the sport.
Attendees of the farewell included family, friends, and notable figures from the netball community, such as former national players and officials. The news of Rokoura’s sudden death sparked widespread shock and sadness, as many expressed disbelief at the loss of a committed and talented individual who played a significant role in developing netball in Fiji.
Ruby-Ann Sorovaki, President of Netball Fiji, paid heartfelt tribute to Rokoura during the service. She described Rokoura as not just an exceptional player and coach but also a mentor and friend to many within the athletics community. “While we are saddened by her passing, we are grateful to someone who dedicated years of her life to netball in Fiji. Thank you for all that you’ve done, Una; you will be missed,” Sorovaki stated, emphasizing Rokoura’s lasting impact on the sport.
Rokoura’s impressive career included representing Fiji in several high-profile international competitions, such as six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships. She captained the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006, and her influence extended beyond the court as she transitioned into coaching various teams, including a stint with the Papua New Guinea Pepes.
Her athletic prowess spanned various sports, as she also excelled in hockey, rugby, basketball, and beach volleyball, showcasing her versatility as an athlete. Sorovaki noted how Rokoura inspired countless athletes with her dedication and leadership, leaving behind a legacy characterized by her commitment to empowerment and excellence in sports.
Rokoura was laid to rest at the Lovonilase cemetery, a final resting place that mirrors the honor and respect she garnered throughout her life. Many within the community are rallying together with the hope that this tragedy will bring about heightened awareness of water safety, particularly in light of recent drowning incidents in local waterways. As they grieve her loss, the spirit and legacy of Unaisi Rokoura will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations within the netball community and beyond.
