Former Fiji Pearls captain and head coach Unaisi Rokoura was laid to rest today at Lovonilase Cemetery in Suva, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow athletes who gathered to honor her remarkable contributions to Fijian netball. The service, held at the Nabua Methodist Church, was a heartfelt tribute, with attendees sharing their condolences while celebrating Rokoura’s lasting legacy.
Ruby-Ann Sorovaki, the President of Netball Fiji, emphasized the profound loss felt throughout the sports community, reflecting on Rokoura’s invaluable role in the development of netball in Fiji. “While we are saddened by her passing, we are grateful to someone who has dedicated years of her life to the development of netball in Fiji. Thank you for all that you’ve done Una; you will be missed,” Sorovaki remarked.
Rokoura’s sports journey began at just 17, showcasing her talents in netball, hockey, rugby, basketball, and beach volleyball. Her impressive career includes participation in six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships. She captained the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006, a significant achievement in her extensive portfolio. Her coaching career saw her lead the Fiji Pearls from 2009 to 2013 and again from 2022 to 2024, exemplifying her unwavering commitment to the sport.
The netball community’s sorrow deepened after her untimely death due to drowning while collecting freshwater mussels near Navuso, Fiji. Teams from Australia and New Zealand notably wore black armbands during recent matches, highlighting the deep respect and admiration Rokoura earned globally.
Beyond her national achievements, Rokoura made a mark internationally by coaching the Papua New Guinea Pepes. Her relentless effort to elevate the standard of netball in Fiji and her mentorship helped inspire numerous athletes and coaches, fostering a culture of growth and excellence. Sorovaki reiterated that Rokoura’s legacy will live on through all the players she influenced.
