The Nabua Methodist Church was filled with hundreds of mourners who came together to celebrate the life of Unaisi Rokoura, a cherished icon in Fijian netball, who passed away tragically at the age of 47. Rokoura’s life was cut short during an outing to collect freshwater mussels in Navuso, near Nausori, leaving behind a profound void in her community that revered her contributions to the sport.
Family, friends, and key figures from the netball community, including former national players and officials, gathered to pay their respects. The unexpected news of Rokoura’s death brought a wave of shock and sorrow, with many in disbelief at the loss of such a dedicated and gifted figure in Fijian netball.
Ruby-Ann Sorovaki, President of Netball Fiji, delivered an emotional tribute during the service, highlighting Rokoura’s roles as an exceptional player, coach, mentor, and friend. “While we are saddened by her passing, we are grateful to someone who dedicated years of her life to netball in Fiji. Thank you for all that you’ve done, Una; you will be missed,” Sorovaki remarked, underscoring the profound impact Rokoura had on the sport and the community.
Throughout her illustrious career, Rokoura represented Fiji in significant international competitions including six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships. She served as the captain of the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006 and later transitioned into coaching roles, mentoring various teams, including the Papua New Guinea Pepes. Her impressive sporting ability also extended to other fields, as Rokoura excelled in hockey, rugby, basketball, and beach volleyball, showcasing her exceptional versatility.
Her commitment to empowerment and excellence in sports inspired countless athletes. Sorovaki remarked on Rokoura’s influence, emphasizing how she motivated many within the athletics community to strive for their best.
Rokoura was laid to rest at the Lovonilase cemetery, a place that reflects the honor and respect she earned throughout her life. As the community rallies together in grief, there is hope that her untimely passing will raise awareness about water safety, especially following recent drowning incidents in local waterways. Unaisi Rokoura’s legacy will continue to live on, inspiring future generations in netball and beyond.
