Farewell to a Shipbuilding Legend: Remembering Luther H. Peacock

Luther H. Peacock, a master shipbuilder and devoted family man, passed away on September 25, 2024, at the age of 84, just days before his 85th birthday. A native of Wilson County, he was raised in Kenly, North Carolina, and attended Buckhorn Elementary and Rock Ridge High School.

At 18, Luther began a distinguished 63-year career at Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company in Virginia. He completed his training at the renowned Apprentice School before serving two years in the United States Army. Upon returning to the shipyard, he played a key role in the submarine and aircraft carrier programs, contributing to the design of Los Angeles-class attack submarines and aircraft carrier development. His extensive experience saw him involved in the construction and design of 53 naval vessels throughout his career, which earned him the title of Master Shipbuilder.

Luther is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 63 years, Marietha (Godwin), and his two children, William Peacock and Robert Peacock, along with his wife Linda. He also leaves a grandson, Luke Peacock. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Billy Ray Peacock and Janice Brown. Luther was a devout Christian and a second-generation member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church.

An enthusiastic sports lover, Luther participated in baseball and football during his time at the Apprentice School and was active in local sports leagues. He was a passionate supporter of teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Baltimore Colts, and the University of North Carolina. Golf was another of his favorite activities, often enjoyed with family and friends.

A graveside service for Luther will take place on September 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Godwin Family Cemetery in Kenly, North Carolina. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the scholarship fund for the Newport News Apprentice School Foundation in his honor.
