Fantastic Four’s Cosmic Horror Take Leaves Audiences Divided

Marvel Studios has recently conducted test screenings for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” and initial reactions indicate a thrilling and chilling portrayal of the beloved superhero team. According to reports, the film takes a “straightforward” approach to the comic book narrative while incorporating elements of cosmic horror, particularly with the character of Galactus, voiced by Ralph Ineson, who has been described as “terrifying” and a standout aspect of the film.

Several audience members noted the Lovecraftian influences present in the movie, suggesting that the depiction of Galactus lends a unique, darker tone to the story. However, not all feedback was positive. Some criticisms highlighted a perceived lack of character development and dissatisfaction with how Reed Richards’ abilities are portrayed, as well as the portrayal of The Thing.

The cast features Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Other notable actors include Ralph Ineson as Galactus and Julia Garner in the role of Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer, alongside Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne in undisclosed roles.

Set within a vibrant, retro-futuristic world reminiscent of the 1960s, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” promises to introduce Marvel’s First Family as they embark on their most formidable challenge yet. The film, produced by Kevin Feige with a score by Michael Giacchino, is set to hit theaters across the United States on July 25, 2025. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the main cast will reprise their roles in the subsequent Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled for release in May 2026.

This new direction for The Fantastic Four features a blend of classic comic storytelling with a modern twist, potentially appealing to both long-time fans and newcomers alike. While some areas require improvement, the excitement built around the cosmic horror elements could open up new narrative possibilities for the franchise, paving the way for more engaging tales in the future.
