FAMU Community Stirs as Presidential Candidate Raises Concerns

Concerns are rising among Florida A&M University (FAMU) supporters regarding the recent nomination of Marva Johnson as a potential candidate for the university’s presidency. Johnson, who has ties to Governor Ron DeSantis and former Governor Rick Scott, lacks administrative experience in higher education and has faced criticism for her connections to the current administration, particularly during a time when critical discussions around Black history have been curtailed in Florida educational systems.

The backlash against her candidacy has been significant; a Change.org petition opposing her appointment has collected over 10,000 signatures. Prominent voices, including Florida’s state NAACP president, are expressing the possibility of taking legal action due to concerns about the selection process. Notably, film director Will Packer, a FAMU alumnus known for blockbusters like “Straight Outta Compton,” has openly criticized the move, suggesting that an unqualified candidate is being positioned for a critical leadership role.

The selection process has raised eyebrows, particularly because Johnson’s name was reportedly added late to the list of interview candidates after the original pool of three finalists was already established. This has led to skepticism about the transparency and fairness of the process.

Former Senator Ben Sasse’s brief and troubled presidency at the University of Florida under DeSantis has amplified fears among FAMU stakeholders about the potential consequences of political appointments in positions that shape educational institutions. Similarly, the recent transformation at New College of Florida—led by DeSantis ally Richard Corcoran—has alarmed many, illustrating a broader trend of right-wing influence in Florida’s public universities.

The ultimate decision rests with the Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the state’s universities. Despite support from some board members, there is a palpable sense of unease among the FAMU community as they advocate for the preservation of their institution’s integrity and educational mission.

This situation emphasizes the importance of accountability and transparency within higher education leadership, particularly in institutions that have historically served marginalized communities. Advocates hope that through continued advocacy and public pressure, FAMU can maintain its commitment to serving the educational needs of its students without succumbing to political influences.
