Wally Amos, the founder of Famous Amos cookies, has passed away at the age of 88. His family confirmed that he died due to dementia.

Amos’s children expressed their admiration for their father, stating, “With his Panama hat, kazoo, and boundless optimism, Famous Amos was a great American success story and a source of Black pride.” They reflected on the lessons he imparted about hard work, self-belief, and pursuing dreams.

Known for his commitment to creating the perfect cookie, Amos shared in a 2008 interview with NPR that love was the secret ingredient in his famous treats. He emphasized the importance of enjoying one’s work, believing that such passion enhances the quality of the outcome.

Although today’s consumers recognize the Famous Amos brand primarily through the signature yellow boxes found in grocery stores, Amos originally launched his cookie venture in 1975 with a storefront in Los Angeles, utilizing a recipe from his aunt. His cookies quickly gained popularity, leading to a thriving business. However, after experiencing a dip in sales in the late 1980s, he eventually sold the company. He later relocated to Hawaii, where he continued to bake his beloved cookies.

Amos died peacefully at home with his wife, Carol, by his side. In remembrance of him, his family requested that instead of sending flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. They also encouraged everyone to enjoy a chocolate chip cookie in honor of his legacy.
