Family and community responsibility play critical roles in the ongoing battle against drug abuse and narcotics, underscoring the importance of maintaining traditional values, especially in rural areas. This vital message was articulated by Mereoni Marama during discussions concerning the Counter Narcotics Bill 2026 in Nabouwalu.

Marama expressed concern over the rising trend of drug abuse within many iTaukei families, particularly in Christian communities, where both addiction and drug trafficking are increasingly observed. She attributed these challenges to the decline of family structures and the weakening of social support systems.

To address these pressing issues, Marama called for families and communities to work together to find effective solutions. She emphasized the need for a revival of strong family values and the importance of creating nurturing environments for children. “Parents and elders have a responsibility to set the right example to ensure that our children are protected from negative influences,” she stated.

Supporting her stance, Amelia Cakau echoed that the fight against drugs begins at home. She highlighted the significant role that parents and guardians play as role models and how their language, behavior, and lifestyle can profoundly impact young people in rural settings. Cakau stressed the necessity of managing modern influences that infiltrate these communities to prevent the erosion of cultural and moral values.

Further discussions encouraged the government to promote active community involvement in the legislative process. This includes soliciting more public feedback on the proposed Counter Narcotics Bill. Ongoing consultations on the bill will continue in Nabouwalu today and will extend to Labasa tomorrow, providing more residents with the opportunity to share their perspectives.

This proactive initiative to tackle drug-related issues through community and family engagement offers a hopeful outlook for a united effort towards a healthier society, strongly anchored in traditional values and supportive relationships.
