Darius McCrary, renowned for his role as Eddie Winslow in the beloved ’90s sitcom “Family Matters,” is currently in custody without bail due to a felony charge related to being a fugitive from another state. The 49-year-old actor was apprehended by United States Border Patrol officers on Sunday, October 5, and is currently held at the San Diego County Jail.
According to court records, McCrary faces a charge categorized as “fugitive arrest” and is not eligible for release. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, October 15. This legal issue arises from a warrant in Michigan linked to a missed court date concerning child support payments, stemming from an ongoing dispute with the mother of his 18-year-old son. McCrary’s representative, Ann Barlow, indicated that he did not receive the notice for the court appearance in a timely manner as it was sent to a P.O. Box instead of his registered address. Additionally, he had been ill with COVID-19, which contributed to the oversight.
At the time of his arrest, McCrary was reportedly on his way to Tijuana, Mexico, where he intended to work on building homes for those in need. His commitment to helping the homeless showcases his dedication to philanthropy despite his current legal troubles.
McCrary gained fame as the teenage son of Carl Winslow on “Family Matters,” which became a cultural staple alongside fellow stars Reginald VelJohnson, Jaleel White, Jo Marie Payton, and Kellie Shanygne Williams. Beyond “Family Matters,” he has appeared in various television series including “The Young and the Restless,” where he portrayed Malcolm Withers, as well as roles in “Star,” “Committed,” “Eve,” and “Anger Management.”
While this situation presents significant challenges for McCrary, the actor’s past contributions to the entertainment industry and his philanthropic intentions may offer a glimmer of hope as he navigates this difficult period.
