A sister of Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, has expressed that she does not recognize the individuals seen in a viral photo wearing “Nebraska Walz’s for Trump” T-shirts. It has been revealed that these individuals are distant cousins of Walz.

The image features eight individuals wearing navy blue pro-Trump shirts alongside a “Trump 2024 — Take America Back” sign, which was later shared by former President Donald Trump on his Truth Social account. Trump remarked, “It is a Great Honor to have your Endorsement. I look forward to meeting you soon!”

The photo was initially shared on X by Charles Herbster, a former gubernatorial candidate in Nebraska who had Trump’s endorsement during the 2022 election. Herbster’s spokesperson stated that those in the photo are relatives of Tim Walz, whose family connects through a common ancestor.

The family group depicted in the photo confirmed their ties to Tim Walz in a message to the Associated Press, explaining that they had gathered to show support for Trump and J.D. Vance shortly after Walz was named the Democratic vice presidential nominee. They mentioned that the shirts were made for the event, and they agreed to share the picture online when asked.

Sandy Dietrich, Walz’s sister from Alliance, Nebraska, speculated that the individuals might be from that branch of the family, noting that she and Tim were not close to them. She identified herself and her immediate family as “Democrats for Tim,” emphasizing her commitment to her brother despite the political rift.

In contrast to Sandy Dietrich’s support, Tim Walz’s other sibling, Jeff Walz, has publicly criticized his brother’s candidacy. Recent reports have highlighted Jeff’s negative remarks about Tim, including that he is “100% opposed to all his ideology” and has considered endorsing Trump. Jeff expressed feelings of irritation upon learning of Tim’s candidacy as Kamala Harris’ running mate from the radio.

Jeff Walz mentioned that the siblings have not communicated since their younger brother Craig’s funeral in 2016, except for a brief call via their mother last month. He noted that his comments about their childhood experiences, including a time when Tim had car sickness, were not meant to imply any deeper issues.

He also indicated he would refrain from making further comments on the matter.
