Asa Ellerup, the former spouse of Rex Heuermann, who is accused of being the Gilgo Beach serial killer, has publicly defended her husband’s innocence in a new documentary on Peacock titled “The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets.” The three-part series features both Ellerup and their daughter, Victoria, shedding light on their perspectives regarding the ongoing allegations against Heuermann.
Despite their divorce shortly after Heuermann’s arrest two years ago, Ellerup referred to him as “her hero” and expressed feelings of renewed love for him. Conversely, their daughter Victoria has expressed skepticism, stating she believes her father is “most likely” the Gilgo Beach serial killer.
John Ray, the attorney representing the family of victim Shannan Gilbert, criticized Ellerup’s remarks, suggesting they are merely an attempt to distance herself from the alleged crimes and presenting her statements as disingenuous. He accused her of being incentivized financially to portray this narrative.
Heuermann faces charges connected to the murders of seven women, with their bodies discovered over the years on Long Island, New York. He maintains his plea of not guilty. A court date is scheduled for June 17, where the judge will consider the admission of crucial DNA evidence in the ongoing trial.
This documentary provides a unique glimpse into the complexities surrounding family dynamics amidst highly publicized criminal cases, raising questions about truth, loyalty, and the nature of public perception in such tragic circumstances.
