Todd Howard, the chief of Bethesda, acknowledges the growing anxiety among fans regarding the studio’s silence on Fallout 5. This apprehension persists even as excitement mounts over the current Fallout television series. Howard reassures fans that development is underway, with news expected in the future.
In a candid discussion featured in Game Informer’s oral history of Fallout, Howard joined other Bethesda veterans to reflect on the series’ future. While specific details surrounding Fallout 5 remain sparse, it has been confirmed that the game is in the works and will be released after The Elder Scrolls 6. This clarification may not ease all concerns, but Howard remains positive about the franchise’s trajectory.
“We’ve never stopped developing Fallout,” Howard emphasizes, pointing to ongoing efforts on Fallout 76. He explains that a significant part of their internal team is currently focused on Elder Scrolls 6, while additional projects related to Fallout are also in the pipeline, even if details have yet to be unveiled. He expresses understanding of the fans’ eagerness, stating, “We’re working on stuff. And there’ll come a time for that.”
Emil Pagliarulo, a longtime quest designer who recently contributed to Starfield, shares aspirations for the next Fallout installment. He desires a game that can capture the essence of previous titles, promising an immersive experience that could total hundreds of hours. Pagliarulo acknowledges the evolution of the gaming industry since the last Fallout release, comparing potential updates to Remastered titles, such as Oblivion. “Things like that. The industry moved on, and so we want to move on with it,” he notes.
Howard reinforces the value of role-playing games that allow players extensive engagement while also expressing a commitment to delivering fresh experiences for fans. As the anticipation builds, Howard urges patience, suggesting that though fans may only have snippets of information, these glimpses do hint at a promising future.
In addition to the discussion about Fallout 5, reports indicate that a remaster of Fallout 3 is also in the works. Bethesda aims for a level of polish comparable to their efforts on Oblivion Remastered, which has fans hopeful for a rekindling of the beloved class Fallout experience.
With Howard’s optimism and insights from long-time designers, the future for the Fallout series appears bright, signaling exciting times ahead for fans of the franchise.
