A 62-year-old woman was hospitalized after being struck by an advertising banner that fell from the upper tier during the Halle Open in Germany. The incident occurred while she was watching the match between Alexander Zverev and Marcos Giron from the lower tier. Fortunately, the woman did not sustain serious injuries and was seen holding an ice pack to her neck as she left for medical evaluation.
In response to the alarming incident, tournament director Ralf Weber expressed regret, stating that nothing like this had ever happened in the tournament’s 32-year history. To make amends, he extended an offer for a free season ticket to the woman for next year’s event.
Event managers Dr. Udo Kleine and Uwe Greipel-Dominik indicated that the banner’s fall might have been caused by vibrations from the crowd, which could have loosened screws. They assured that they would inspect all other banners and attachments for safety immediately following the match.
After the brief interruption, Zverev returned to play and secured a swift victory, winning the match 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the last 16.
