Fall Forecast: Early Heat Gives Way to Rainy Relief

HAZARD, Ky. – The arrival of fall has been marked by temperatures hovering nearly ten degrees above the seasonal average, with highs reaching close to 90 degrees throughout the day. However, a shift towards more typical temperatures could be on the horizon.

As the new work week begins, temperatures are expected to drop to the low 80s. Rain chances will rise starting around 4 p.m. on Sunday, with isolated showers and the possibility of some thunderstorms extending into the late evening. Overnight, the likelihood of showers will continue to increase, with rain anticipated for both Monday and Tuesday. Some areas north of KY-80 could receive up to an inch of rain over the next three days, while the amounts are expected to decrease farther south, although rain is still likely in those regions. Following these rainfall episodes, temperatures are projected to settle in the mid to high 70s throughout the work week.

Looking ahead, the forecast for the next two weeks suggests that temperatures will remain slightly above average, with highs in the 70s and low 80s continuing into early October. Rainfall may persist above average, offering hope for alleviating the ongoing drought. As the dry season approaches, the rainfall amounts in the coming weeks will determine the severity of the drought conditions.
