Kirk Cousins is set to start for the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins as Michael Penix Jr. recovers from a bone bruise in his left knee, according to sources. This injury occurred during last week’s match against the San Francisco 49ers, contributing to the Falcons’ current 3-3 record. Penix’s practice was limited over the last few days, leading to his questionable status for the upcoming game.
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris expressed confidence in Cousins, noting that he took significant practice reps throughout the week. “I’m really confident in our backup,” Morris remarked about Cousins, while also emphasizing the team’s commitment to giving Penix every opportunity to recover, praising his toughness.
This Sunday’s game also marks the 10-year anniversary of Cousins’ notable postgame moment after a thrilling win while he was with Washington. Previously, Cousins helped lead the Falcons to a strong 6-3 start last season before facing difficulties due to nine interceptions over a five-game stretch, following injuries to his right elbow and shoulder.
Penix, during his second season, has had a challenging run as a starter, holding a 4-5 record. He has completed 61% of his passes for 1,409 yards, accumulating five touchdowns and three interceptions this season, placing him at 22nd in the league with a 47.7 QBR.
Additionally, the Falcons provided an update on wide receiver Drake London, who has been listed as questionable due to a hip issue. Although London had been a full participant in practice this week, he was limited during Friday’s session.
In a related roster move, starting inside linebacker Divine Deablo has been placed on injured reserve due to a broken left forearm sustained in last Sunday’s game. This will sideline him for at least four weeks. Consequently, the Falcons have signed inside linebacker Ronnie Harrison from the practice squad and safety Jordan Fuller to the active roster after a stint on injured reserve.
Easton Stick will be Cousins’ backup for the game, with wide receiver Dylan Drummond also elevated from the practice squad. The Falcons are navigating a mix of challenges and opportunities as they prepare for their matchup against Miami.
