Raheem Morris, who had a brief stint as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, has officially parted ways with the team following the conclusion of the 2024 season. His tenure lasted just two seasons, despite significant expectations surrounding his appointment, particularly after the Falcons considered several prominent coaching candidates before hiring him.
Among those interviewed were well-known figures such as Mike Vrabel, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Macdonald, and Ben Johnson. However, former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was initially viewed as the frontrunner for the position. Arthur Blank, the Falcons’ owner, ultimately chose Morris over Belichick due to concerns about the long-term implications of hiring the veteran coach. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that some executives within the Falcons organization feared the need for another overhaul if they hired Belichick, who might only serve as a temporary solution.
Interestingly, discussions between Blank and Patriots owner Robert Kraft may have influenced the final decision. According to an article by ESPN, Belichick felt confident about his chances, especially following a series of positive meetings with Blank, including one aboard Blank’s superyacht. However, Blank’s subsequent conversation with Kraft reportedly raised concerns regarding Belichick’s character, leading Blank to reconsider. A source indicated that Kraft’s caution played a significant role in why the Falcons opted against bringing in Belichick.
While Kraft’s representation has denied any negative commentary about Belichick, the fallout from this decision has raised eyebrows, especially given Morris’ relatively short tenure.
In a statement released upon the announcement of Morris’ departure, Blank expressed gratitude for both Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot, who was also dismissed. He acknowledged their dedication but emphasized the need for new leadership to achieve better results on the field and meet fan expectations. Blank wished them well in their future endeavors.
Following these changes, the Falcons are actively seeking new leadership, having requested interviews with Anthony Weaver, the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, and Klint Kubiak, the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator. They are also planning to engage with former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski as they look to chart a new course for the franchise moving forward. This proactive approach indicates the Falcons’ commitment to finding a new direction as they seek to improve their performance in the coming seasons.
