The Atlanta Falcons have confirmed their decision to franchise tag tight end Kyle Pitts, ensuring he will remain with the team for at least another season. This move comes after multiple seasons of struggle and recovery, particularly following his impressive rookie year where he recorded 1,026 receiving yards, making him only the second tight end in NFL history to surpass 1,000 yards in his debut season.

The franchise tag, which is estimated to cost the Falcons approximately $16.5 million, will be reflected in the 2026 salary cap. Pitts, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and is recognized as the highest-drafted tight end to date, faced challenges over the last two seasons due to an MCL injury and inconsistent performances. In 2023 and 2024, he failed to accumulate 700 receiving yards, which raised questions about his potential. However, a resurgence in 2025 saw him achieving 928 yards and a career-best five touchdowns, indicating he may still be on the path to becoming the transformative player the Falcons envisioned.

As Pitts looks ahead, he plans to attend the Tight End University camp this summer, marking his first attendance in three years. He has expressed a commitment to continuing his development, stating, “You never arrive… Each year, you keep getting better. I’m on the younger side, so there’s a lot of growing to do.”

Despite the uncertainties surrounding contracts and financial considerations, Pitts emphasized his desire to remain in Atlanta, where he has amassed 284 catches for 3,579 yards and 15 touchdowns throughout his career. He ranked ninth in receiving yards and 20th in touchdown receptions among tight ends over the past five seasons. His focus on the present and his teammates underlines a strong contender mentality as he hopes to build on his recent performances.

Notably, from Week 12 through Week 15 of last season, Pitts recorded 31 receptions for 395 yards, establishing a new benchmark for an Atlanta tight end during a four-game stretch. His standout performance in Week 14, featuring 11 catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, highlighted his ability to deliver when it mattered most.

With the hiring of head coach Kevin Stefanski, described as a tight end enthusiast, the Falcons’ commitment to Pitts seems cemented for the upcoming season, potentially paving the way for a long-term extension in the future. Pitts’ optimism and drive, coupled with his undeniable talent, present a promising outlook for both him and the Falcons as they eye upcoming seasons.
