The Atlanta Falcons have acquired linebacker Matthew Judon from the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2025 third-round draft pick, the teams announced on Thursday. Judon, who had recently returned to practice with the Patriots after a brief absence, will look to bolster the Falcons’ pass rush.

As of now, the Falcons and Judon are yet to finalize a contract for the upcoming season, but discussions are expected to begin soon, according to a source. On the same day, the Falcons adjusted Pro Bowl guard Chris Lindstrom’s contract to create additional salary cap space by converting part of his $12.5 million base salary into a signing bonus.

Judon expressed his gratitude to the Patriots on Instagram, saying, “Thank you for everything, New England. Atlanta, we ready.” He turned 32 on Thursday and is a four-time Pro Bowler who recorded a career-high 15.5 sacks in 2022, following a 12.5-sack season in 2021. However, he was sidelined for most of the last season due to a torn biceps.

Falcons coach Raheem Morris praised Judon’s impact potential, highlighting his ability to change games. “You get a guy with the ability to come in here and be a game wrecker for you right now, you figure out those things,” he said, referencing the success of acquiring Von Miller mid-season in Los Angeles.

The Falcons have struggled to find a double-digit sack leader since Vic Beasley in 2016, coinciding with their last Super Bowl appearance. This offseason, they faced a setback with rookie edge rusher Bralen Trice suffering a season-ending knee injury during a preseason game.

Judon is entering the final year of the four-year, $56 million contract he signed with the Patriots in March 2021, with a scheduled base salary of $6.5 million, which he has indicated does not reflect his market value. Earlier this summer, there were tensions between Judon and the Patriots, culminating in a non-participation during training camp practices before he ultimately returned to the team.

During his tenure in New England, Judon became a fan favorite, often engaging with supporters before practices and games. The Patriots, who finished last season with a 4-13 record, are looking to balance immediate needs with long-term goals by trading away their top pass rusher, also recognizing the value of a third-round pick for a team seeking to rebuild its talent pool.
