Faith Evans Launches Autism Advocacy for Parents of Autistic Children

Faith Evans, the renowned Grammy-winning singer, has embraced a new role as a passionate advocate for parents of children diagnosed with autism. Evans’ journey began when her 18-year-old son, Ryder Russaw, who is on the autism spectrum, was growing up. In the early stages, she found herself in a network of parents who provided necessary guidance and support, key elements in navigating the unique challenges of raising a child with special needs.

Reflecting on her initial steps into this community, Evans recalls being introduced to the concept of an Individualized Education Program (IEP), a term unfamiliar to her at the time, which became a cornerstone in her child’s educational journey. This turning point not only provided Ryder with tailored educational strategies but also equipped Evans with invaluable insights that she continues to share with others.

In an effort to extend this support to more families, Evans founded Ryder’s Room Inc., an organization dedicated to offering resources and tools for families like hers. The very first Ryder’s Room Gala is set to take place on Saturday, September 27, at The Newark Museum of Art, featuring an impressive lineup of performers including rapper MC Lyte, comedian Mike Epps, R&B singer Christopher Williams, producer Redman, Broadway star Avery Wilson, and rapper Lil’ Cease.

Evans emphasizes the importance of community, noting how it plays a crucial role for parents supporting children with autism. She candidly shares that the journey can often feel isolating, but it is the sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding from other parents that provides strength during challenging times.

Her son Ryder, characterized by Evans as a typical teenager with his own preferences and energies, stands at the heart of her mission. In her own words, she expresses her deep gratitude for her enduring fan base while acknowledging a new life focus: “My new normal is that God has another assignment for me… to be there for my son and what he needs. I am his number one advocate.”

Although she has taken a step back from her music career in recent years, her dedication to advocacy work signals her commitment to using her platform to effect positive change. Ryder, in turn, remains her most devoted supporter, cementing their bond as they embark on this inspirational journey together.

Faith Evans’ endeavor to support families of children with autism not only highlights the necessity of community support but also inspires hope, showing that even in the face of challenges, advocacy and understanding can make a significant impact.
