The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) has recognized St Pius X Parish in Raiwaqa for its outstanding commitment to environmental initiatives, celebrating the launch of Phase 2 of the Circular Pacific Plastics Project (CPP) within the parish community. This event signifies a major milestone as it marks the first time a faith-based institution has integrated PRF’s structured plastic recovery and recycling education into its community operations.

Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, referred to this initiative as a prime example of how faith, values, and environmental responsibility can unite to create meaningful behavioral changes. He also acknowledged the vital support provided by the Missionary Society of St Columban (Region of Oceania) and the SEMA Group in establishing and sustaining this partnership.

Special mention was made of Noa Mervyn Tuivunilagi, the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Coordinator, for his leadership in making this essential project a reality. Deo remarked that St Pius X Parish’s active engagement with the CPP Phase 2 program sets a powerful example, illustrating how churches and faith-based organizations can successfully advocate for recycling, community education, and sustainable practices.

PRF offered praise for the collective efforts of the parish community and their volunteers, highlighting their leadership as an inspirational model for other faith communities in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. Deo expressed his pride in working alongside partners who uphold dignity, values, and community in their pursuit of a circular economy.

The implementation of CPP Phase 2 is in collaboration with ANZPAC and SPREP, backed by the Australian Government-funded Pacific Ocean Litter Project, along with other local community partners. This initiative is poised to enhance commitment to recycling and environmental sustainability, heralding a hopeful future for ecological responsibility across the region.
