As the Fairwell Festival draws thousands to the Deschutes County Fairgrounds this weekend, law enforcement agencies, including the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), Oregon State Police (OSP), and Redmond Police Department, are urging both drivers and festivalgoers to prioritize safety.
With significant crowds expected for this major music event, local and state police will be ramping up their patrols, particularly along U.S. Highway 97 and key intersections in Redmond. Attendees are advised to plan ahead, allowing extra travel time and considering alternatives such as rideshare services or carpooling in order to avoid peak traffic times.
“Fairwell Festival is one of the highlights of summer in Central Oregon,” said Jason Carr, Public Information Officer for DCSO. “We want to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. With the anticipated influx of visitors, we encourage festival-goers to be patient and make responsible decisions regarding transportation. Our goal is to help everyone create wonderful memories and return home safely.”
DCSO will be strategically positioned at the fairgrounds collaborating closely with event staff, while OSP and Redmond PD will focus on road safety measures, particularly DUII prevention. Historically, OSP has taken significant action against impaired drivers during previous festival weekends, making over 20 DUII arrests last year alone.
Capt. Kyle Kennedy from Oregon State Police emphasized the importance of having a sober transportation plan: “Your festival itinerary should include safe arrangements for getting home. Whether you opt for a rideshare service or designate a sober driver, planning your safe return is crucial.”
While the law enforcement presence may seem heightened, it serves to enhance safety and ensure that both festival attendees and local residents experience a hassle-free weekend. Those not attending the festival should also anticipate increased traffic in and around Redmond, particularly during the busy late afternoon and evening hours on Friday and Saturday.
This weekend not only promises exciting performances and community celebration but also emphasizes the significance of safety and responsibility, reinforcing the idea that good planning leads to memorable experiences.
