Andrew Garfield, who portrayed Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in the acclaimed 2010 film “The Social Network,” recently addressed the possibility of reprising his role in the upcoming follow-up film. While attending the New York Film Festival, Garfield was questioned about his potential involvement in the sequel, but he made it clear there are no plans for him to return. “No, no,” Garfield responded, emphasizing that his character, Eduardo Saverin, is enjoying life in Singapore and is distanced from Facebook’s current activities.

The new film, titled “The Social Reckoning,” is described as a “companion piece” rather than a direct sequel to the original movie. Aaron Sorkin, who penned the first film’s Oscar-winning script, will return as both writer and director for this installment. “The Social Reckoning” draws its narrative from The Wall Street Journal’s 2021 investigation called “The Facebook Files,” which revealed the company’s awareness of potential harm caused by its platform and the lack of corrective actions.

The project has recently announced its cast, with Jeremy Strong from “Succession” set to portray Mark Zuckerberg, a role originally played by Jesse Eisenberg. Additionally, Oscar winner Mikey Madison will take on the role of whistleblower Frances Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White will portray Jeff Horwitz, the journalist who collaborated with Haugen. Comedian Bill Burr has joined the cast in an as-yet undisclosed role.

Despite not being part of the project, Garfield expressed enthusiasm for the new film, eager to see the progression of the Facebook saga on screen. The original film was widely praised for its inside look at the tumultuous beginnings of Facebook and garnered several Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning three. “The Social Reckoning” is scheduled to release in theaters on October 9, 2026, and it aims to delve into Facebook’s more recent controversies while standing on the strong foundation laid by its predecessor.

The anticipation surrounding “The Social Reckoning” suggests it aims to capture the complexity and impact of social media in modern society, continuing the legacy of its award-winning precursor.
