In Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, police have closed off the Kenosha exit ramp from the BA Expressway after discovering a homemade explosive device during a traffic stop. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on May 22 when an off-duty officer noticed a truck operating against traffic on the exit ramp.
Upon stopping the vehicle, officers noticed drug paraphernalia, prompting a search that led to the recovery of a homemade explosive device constructed from PVC pipe, end caps, and a fuse. The police ceased their search and contacted the Tulsa Bomb Squad for assistance. Upon inspection, the bomb squad confirmed that the device was active and managed to safely disrupt it.
BAPD Patrol Sergeant James Koch stated that the field investigation will be compiled for further examination by detectives, with hopes of clarifying the circumstances surrounding the explosive device and the intentions of those involved. Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were arrested for drug-related offenses, with the driver facing additional felony warrants. Furthermore, the two could face more serious charges related to the possession of the explosive device.
The situation has since been stabilized, and roadways have been reopened. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is now taking over the case for further investigation.
This successful intervention by the police highlights the importance of vigilance and prompt action, ensuring community safety while also addressing underlying issues related to drug paraphernalia use.
