The Southeast’s premier Juneteenth celebration is set to transform Plaza Midwood into a hub of cultural festivity from June 12 to June 15, commemorating nearly 30 years of community engagement through free activities and educational displays.

Beginning the festivities, young attendees aged 4-16 will take part in a Youth Cultural Camp at Weeping Willow AME Zion Church on June 12. This program includes hands-on activities such as craft-making, jewelry design, and tie-dye sessions running from morning to late afternoon, providing a creative outlet for the youth.

A highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Shirley L. Fulton Community Stewardship Awards, honoring six esteemed legal professionals: Judges Calvin Murphy, Rickey McKoy-Mitchell, Yvonne Mims Evans, Rebecca Thorne Tin, T. Michael Todd, and attorney James E. Ferguson II, acknowledging their contributions to the community.

Musical celebrations will reverberate through Thomas Avenue on June 13, as performers converge at the House of Africa for an evening filled with vibrant rhythms.

The Freedom & Unity March will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday, starting from Skyla Credit Union and making its way along Central Avenue to the House of Africa, where festivities will carry on into the night.

In addition to the lively atmosphere, local merchants will showcase products from both America and Africa. Attendees can also benefit from complimentary health checks and wellness advice provided by medical staff.

Children will have a dedicated space to learn and play in the Children’s Village, featuring educational activities and storytelling. The main stage will be alive with African music, energetic dancers, and delightful performances. As the evening unfolds, fashion enthusiasts can anticipate a runway show featuring models styled by Khadim Soung.

On Sunday at 11 a.m., Park Ministries will lead a worship service. The event will also offer free transportation every hour across both days, with activities concluding by 9 p.m.

This year’s Juneteenth event not only celebrates freedom and unity but also emphasizes health, creativity, and community engagement, making it a weekend of joy and reflection for all attendees.
